Are you KST?
If you're KST that makes you a Kayak Safety Team teammate. If you haven't been KST but would like to be have we got the goods for you! Our small group of safety trained kayakers support swimmers in the Cayuga Lake Triathlon and Women Swimmin' events each summer. If you'd like to be one of the group please check into their web pages and register! Then set about learning all you can about boat handling skills, calm wet exits and various boat re-entries. There are sessions on-going all summer where you can learn these skills. They're fun and you'll learn a lot about your boat at the same time. For Thursday night sessions email Ben at brb4@cornell.edu. Start here: Cayuga Lake Triathlon Look for volunteer info. Women Swimmin' Go to Boater Info. For a rough idea of what you can learn to raise your skill level go to this guide. Click on Expert Index and look for safety rescue skills. Make this the summer you raise your comfort level in your boat. Confidence can take you a long way on the water!

IT'S EASY! If you have anything you'd like posted to the blog simply click on Comments following a posting and send it off. It'll get posted in a day or two. Be sure to include an email address in case we need clarification. THIS IS YOUR BLOG. If you'd like to organize an outing and would like others to come along you may do so here. Hint: For weekend outings please send along your organizing plans by Thursday afternoon. Be sure to check weather (water temp?) and add specifics about how to dress, where to meet, what time and what duration you intend to paddle. Alternative plans are a good idea. Include contact info.
First there was Women Swimmin'. Then the Cayuga Lake Triathlon. We formed a kayak safety team to support both. Then were overwhelmed when it registered on us the sheer number of kayakers who turn out for Women Swimmin' each year. All those paddlers, there must be some among them who would like to get together to venture out for fun. Voila! IKC was formed in October, 2007. Come on out and join in the fun!

NEED LESSONS?
Ben's sessions take place in July and August. Check with P'dockers for the start of their lessons.
HOW TO FIND THE BEST PADDLING PLACES plus DIRECTIONS TO THE PUT INS... Most of us use these two highly recommended resources: DeLorme's NYS Atlas and Gazetteer featuring boat launches on a background of topo maps of the entire state. Available at bookstores for about $20. Quiet Water/Take a Paddle/Finger Lakes guidebook. Available at bookstores for about $20. Another tip is to check out where the other paddling clubs go. The Binghamton club (Ahwaga) heads south and tends to be more river oriented. The CNY Kayakers use the Finger Lakes and points north a lot. The Rochester ADK Kayak group uses the Finger Lakes also. Links for all three are below.
